Jan Fitch
Jan was introduced to bird carving by a local woodcarver after sailing from England to the States in 1979. By saying “I wish I could do that” she was sent on a journey of not only carving birds from wood but winning awards, exhibiting in shows and teaching workshops in the US and Canada. For a few years, she continued to travel on boats and any corner on the boat or space on the dock was her workshop. Now she lives on Wolfe Island and creates and teaches in her Kingston studio. She still loves working in wood but has introduced additional mediums to create her bird art. Working with cast paper, she creates a two-dimensional limited edition image. Also, incorporating her love of driftwood, she uses a man-made medium to carve the bird and marry it with the perfect piece of driftwood created by Mother Nature.
